Canada drops on corruption index

Updated 3 weeks ago

Canada fell four places in this year’s Corruption Perception Index, ranking 12th least corrupt out of 180 countries, according to annual Transparency International report. The drop comes after construction company SNC-Lavalin was hit with a $280 million fine by the Court of Quebec and one of its former executives was convicted of bribery. Although it still holds the highest ranking of the Americas, Canada has dropped 12 points since 2010 and has fallen behind countries like Germany, the Netherlands and Norway. Leading the list were Denmark and New Zealand; Somalia was last.

This year’s CPI underscores that corruption remains a significant problem in the Americas region, with the scores of both Canada and the U.S., among others, declining this year. The U.S. score is the lowest it has been in eight years.
